The young Irishman was the subject of a £500,000 bid from the League One side.

Bolton Wanderers target Johnny Kenny has opened up on his Celtic future following a rejected £500,000 bid from the Trotters in June, with new clubs entering the transfer battle for his services.

Even prior to Sam Dalby's recent pre-season injury, Bolton understood their need to add options in attack.

The departure of Aaron Collins for £800,000 to MK Dons left quite the gap that needed to be filled, and Steven Schumacher and his recruitment team looked to address at least part of this issue by signing Kenny.

They offered the Scottish Premiership champions half-a-million pounds for the 22-year-old, as per Sky Sports, but it was rebuffed by Celtic.

The Hoops reportedly wanted £1 million for the Irishman, but he has now put any chances of a permanent move away from Glasgow to bed.

Johnny Kenny issues update on his Celtic future - Bolton Wanderers also facing fresh transfer threats

Kenny has said that he wants to sign a new deal with his parent club, and his manager, Brendan Rodgers, reciprocates that feeling.

Despite a new contract being on the horizon for the young forward - his current deal runs until next summer - there is still a chance that he could end up going out on loan.

Bolton have also seemingly been joined by fresh competitors for Kenny's services. According to The Bolton News, a host of the Trotters' League One rivals, as well as Championship clubs, want to sign the 22-year-old this summer.

"I’d love to sign a new contract at this club," Kenny told the Irish Examiner.

"It’s the club I want to play for at the end of the day. Since I came back in January. I can’t describe how good the manager has been for me.

"Obviously, he wants me to sign a new deal, so that’s very promising for me at this club. I’m happy to sign a new contract. The manager will make his decision on that (another loan move). Wherever I am, I want to play football.

"I want to develop myself, and I think playing games is going to develop me. I want to try and break into the national team, and I think playing games is the way I’m going to get into that team. I think the manager will have a pathway for me, and I don’t think he’s going to keep me here and not play me.

"So whatever the manager decides, I'm all behind, because everything he's told me since January has been 100 per cent, so I believe in the manager.

"I came in, learned my trade the last few months, learned the system in and out of possession. I feel like I'm ready to kick on now and hopefully get the opportunities to do that.

"My dream is to represent this club on a daily basis. There's so many games at this club and I hope I can break in and get opportunities to do that because that's all I want to do. It's such a big club and I want to be part of it."

Bolton Wanderers' Johnny Kenny hope is not lost yet - the chances are getting tougher though

While he may have put pale to any permanent move to the Toughsheet Community Stadium, it should be encouraging for Bolton that Kenny is at least still a viable option for them to go after this summer, and at a reduced cost compared to what they would have had to pay to sign him permanently.

He certainly doesn't have a proven record that Wanderers could immediately rely on to produce the goods for them should they pull off a move for the forward, but the faith that Rodgers and Celtic as a whole have shown in him certainly points towards the Irishman being a potential star of the future.

Kenny would certainly represent a different type of striker option to the earlier summer addition of Dalby as more of a pacey, smaller centre-forward, and that's what Bolton look like they need as the missing link to their promotion chances.
