Bolton Wanderers are set to rival Wigan Athletic for the signing of Victor Adeboyejo, according to Alan Nixon.

The Latics had initially shown a willingness to trigger the release clause in the forward’s contract, but have stalled out in completing the deal.

This has allowed the League One side to steal a march as they look to overtake Wigan in the race to sign the Burton Albion player.

Ian Evatt is hoping to strengthen his attacking options having sold Dapo Afolayan earlier in the window, with Bolton hoping to secure a top six finish.

Bolton are planning to match the release clause in Adeboyejo’s contract, and will now look to negotiate with the player himself over personal terms.

Wigan have been negotiating with the player already, but have yet to come to an agreement.

Wanderers believe they can persuade the 25-year old to make the switch to the University of Bolton Stadium this month.

The striker has 11 goals and two assists from 26 league appearances so far this season.

The Verdict

This would be a strong signing for Bolton if they can get ahead of Wigan.

The striker has been in impressive form this season, and his goals could be a huge help to Bolton’s top six bid.

Defeat to Derby County at the weekend showed that there is still room to improve for Evatt’s side.

So bringing in a proven goal scorer at this level could be exactly what the team needs to secure a play-off place.
