Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura shows support to Jair Bolsonaro ahead of Brazil elections

It isn’t unusual to see footballers shying away from revealing their true stance on politics or any divisive topic that engulfs societal discussions, but Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Moura has left no doubts about where his allegiances lie ahead of Brazil’s presidential elections.

Leftist candidate Lula da Silva, who was president from 2003 to 2010, is someone whom the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) winger does not identify with. Instead, he has pledged his unequivocal support to the far-right candidate, Jair Bolsonaro.

Speaking in an interview to Cara a Tapa via So Foot (h/t Daily Mail), Lucas said:

In September 2021, International NGO Human Rights Watch published an article whereby Bolsonora was accused of threatening human rights in Brazil by way of allegedly harassing the Supreme Court and threatening to cancel the 2022 elections as he believes the current electoral system in place is corrupt.

Moura continued:

It is no one’s place to tell anyone who or who not to support when it comes to politics. It will always remain a controversial issue, no matter what stance someone may take.

Lucas is well within his rights to support whoever he wants and vote for them. The elections in Brazil are set to take place on October 2 but there are fears that Bolsonaro’s administration could incite an armed uprising in case they lose, or are predicting that they will lose.

For the ex-PSG star, football-wise, his involvement is up for debate when Spurs take on Sporting CP this week on matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League group stages. He is currently sidelined with an injury and it remains to be seen when he will be match-fit again.
