After shining in his first Bundesliga start in nearly three years, Köln-native Timo Horn has now earned VfL Bochum’s starting goalkeeper position. This was confirmed by Bochum head coach Dieter Hecking at Thursday’s press conference. The 31-year-old will be the man to lead the Ruhrpott club in their relegation fight with Patrick Drewes returning to the bench after recovering from illness.
Hecking’s Bochum are flying high after defeating Revier rivals Borussia Dortmund in the “kleines Revierderby” last weekend. The continued struggles of relegation race rivals FC Heidenheim accord last season’s relegation playoff winners a reasonable chance of escaping the drop. Hecking’s team have recently been buoyed by successful performances by strikers Myron Boadu and new acquisition Georgios Masouras.
“We have made a decision and told both of them [Drewes and Horn] after training,” Hecking remarked on Thursday. “Timo Horn will play in Wolfsburg. It was a decision for Timo [Horn], not against Patti [Drewes]. He did well against Dortmund, the team seemed stable with him.
“I have no major complaints about Patti,” Hecking continued. “Timo deserves it because he has been consistent in training in the weeks leading up to it. [his start]. I’m sure Patti will support him as he did Patti.“
