Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side struggled to create any scoring opportunities yet their defence bailed them out with a strong performance for 83 minutes.
However, their efforts would be wasted as a pair of goals from Dario Benedetto secured a 2-0 win for Boca Juniors over Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores semi-final first leg.
His 83rd and 88th-minute goals were the lone highlights on an otherwise forgettable night.
Other than an early shot from Pablo Pérez that went just high and wide, Weverton was pretty comfortable in goal and made a pair of easy saves in a scoreless first 45 minutes.
Boca Juniors continued to press high to dominate proceedings and finally came up with the breakthrough seven minutes from time.
After Dudu made a spectacular save on Lucas Olaza’s free-kick, Benedetto headed home the following corner to put Boca ahead.
Just five minutes later, Benedetto completed his brace with one of the goals of the tournament. A swift turn gave the Boca striker just enough space to unleash a blast into the bottom corner to double their advantage.
The two sides will meet back in Brazil in two weeks time for the second leg.
Grêmio defeated River Plate 1-0 at El Monumental in the other semi-final.
