Legendary former Milan midfielder Zvonimir Boban had several complaints about his former side after Tuesday’s Champions League loss against Liverpool, and was particularly upset by the decision to sell Sandro Tonali to Newcastle last summer.
The Rossoneri were comfortably beaten in a 3-1 loss to Liverpool on home soil on Tuesday night. Paulo Fonseca has just one win from his first five competitive matches in charge.
Among several complaints in the immediate aftermath of Tuesday’s game, Boban was particularly confused by Fonseca’s selections in midfield. He asked the coach about his decisions in a direct manner on Sky Sport.
“Reijnders is not a six, but an eight. Loftus-Cheek is not a 10, but an eight. You can’t think of playing 4-3-3 with the two of them together? Are you thinking of making changes or carrying on like this?,” he asked.
Later in Sky’s coverage, Boban questioned the club’s decision to sell Italy international Sandro Tonali to Newcastle last summer.
“Milan sold Tonali, their best Italian player and one who was really attached to the club. Seeing him go away from Milan is a shame, these things have consequences.
“He refused Juventus, who had offered €42m to Bresica in order to come to Milan: These are the values that you should never lose.”
