Transfer News: Chelsea target Boubacar Kamara to join Aston Villa

According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t Football.London), Chelsea will miss out on Marseille star Boubacar Kamara with the French midfielder set to join Aston Villa on a five-year deal in the summer transfer window.

The talented youngster has had a great season with the French side helping the Ligue 1 giants finish second behind only champions Paris Saint-Germain. He has been a subject of interest for the Blues for quite some time now but his future now lies elsewhere.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has played 48 times for Marseille scoring one goal and providing one assist across all competitions. Also capable of playing at centre-back, Kamara’s versatility has come in handy for the French club this season.

Whilst many clubs were supposedly interested in the talented Frenchman, Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa have come out trumps. The Villains could do with mettle in midfield and their last day collapse to Manchester City last night reinforced that fact.

Midfield reinforcements?

Although we have lost out on Kamara, it makes sense that we are looking to reinforce our midfield in the transfer window. Given the options at our disposal, it is more than a fair assessment.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, as good as they have been for us over their Blues career, are not getting any younger and have not been performing to the standards expected of them this season. Both players will also enter the final year of their Chelsea deal this summer and a resolution has to be found sooner or later.

Aston Villa closing in on securing the signature of Chelsea target Boubacar Kamara.

In Conor Gallagher and Bill Gilmour, Chelsea have two of the most talented young midfielders in Europe. Once they return from their loan spells, the duo are undoubtedly going to find a place in the first team at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel.

Whilst Mateo Kovacic has pedigree, other midfield options like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley don’t inspire much confidence. If the Blues want to continue competing at the top level they will have to make adequate midfield reinforcements soon.

Kamara might not be coming but there are many other options that we can explore as possibilities in the midfield. But then losing out to Villa for a talented 22-year-old that too on a Bosman deal is a difficult pill to swallow.
