ESPN are reporting that Ajax are set to be without Steven Bergwijn for a few weeks. The 26-year-old Dutch winger has been in fine form over the past few games, with seven goals and four assists in his 16 Eredivisie appearances. However, Bergwijn looks like he will miss the several matches after suffering a hamstring injury during training on Thursday.
This will certainly be a blow for an Ajax team that are playing catch up after a terrible start to the season. Since returning from the winter break they have managed to put together a run of four games unbeaten, with three wins and one draw which came last time out against leaders PSV Eindhoven. Head coach John van’t Schip will now have to find a replacement for Bergwijn who had grabbed two assists in the recent run of good form for the Amsterdam side.
Ajax are currently fifth in the table, level on points with fourth place AZ Alkmaar and six points behind FC Twente in third.
