McGodrick strike sees Blades dent Brighton’s top-flight hopes

Scorers: McGoldrick 19′; Moder 56′

Sheffield United secured only their fifth win of the season as they beat Brighton 1-0 at Brammall Lane.

Brighton could ease their relegation worries here and really should have gone ahead on 12 minutes only for Neal Maupay to finish poorly from 12 yards out.

But it was actually the home side who took the lead as David McGoldrick tapped home after some good work by Rhian Brewster.

Into the second half and Maupay was at it again as his left-footed effort was saved well by David Stockdale and then Jakob Moder’s goal was disallowed for offside.

The away side had another golden opportunity on 70 minutes as Yves Bissouma’s close-range effort squirmed just wide of the far post.

Werner scores as Chelsea beat West Ham to stay fourth

Scorers: Werner 43′

Chelsea are now three points ahead of West Ham in the race for Champions League football.

The Hammers had a shout for a penalty in the first half when the ball struck Chelsea’s César Azpilicueta on the arm, but a quick VAR check determined his arm was in a natural position.

But on the stroke of half-time, Chelsea took the lead when Ben Chiwell pulled a low cross into the box, and Timo Werner side-footed home.

Werner then missed golden chance for 2-0 in the second half when Łukasz Fabiański saved Mason Mount’s drive from range, but the German striker was unable to convert the rebound.

With 10 minutes to go, the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Fabián Balbuena caught Chilwell on the calf when clearing the ball and after checking with VAR, the referee brandished a very harsh red card.

Newcastle stun profligate Liverpool with late equaliser

Scorers: Salah 3′; Willock 90+5′

Liverpool’s Champions League hopes were dealt another big blow when they could only draw with Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off.

The Reds were ahead after just three minutes when Mohamed Salah displayed brilliant technique to control a high ball before rifling past Martin Dúbravka in goal.

Jürgen Klopp’s side continued to pepper the Newcastle goal but despite their 22 attempts – the scoreline remained the same – and the Magpies looked to have scored a shock injury time equaliser.

Callum Wilson broke through and bundled home after a fortunate ricochet off Alisson, before the effort was ridiculously ruled out for handball following VAR intervention.

But there was still time for late drama, when Arsenal loanee Joe Willock popped up to score in the 95th minute – his fourth goal for the club since joining in January.

Liverpool remain sixth in the table on 54 points, while Steve Bruce’s men are now nine points clear of the relegation zone.
