There are talks about Blackburn signing Wigan's Thelo Aasgaard, but he is not the Sammie Szmodics replacement they need.
Blackburn Rovers were dealt a big blow last week as their star man departed for the Premier League.
Sammie Szmodics played the best football of his career last season for Blackburn and has subsequently earned a long-awaited move to the Premier League, signing for newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
He even managed to grab three goals in two games at the start of this season for Rovers, but a move was always imminent. Fortunately for Szmodics, he managed to continue his goalscoring habits this weekend as he shockingly opened the scoring against Manchester City just seven minutes into his Premier League debut, but the top-flight champions walked away with a 4-1 win.
It was heartbreak for Blackburn, for whom Szmodics scored 33 goals in all competitions last season, but despite this huge blow, there is still a lot of optimism that the club will enjoy a strong campaign. They have enjoyed a fine start so far, picking up seven points from a possible nine and scoring a whopping 14 goals in four games in all competitions.
Despite this positive start, there will be worries that goals will begin to dry up now that Szmodics has departed. The club reportedly received a fee of £9 million plus add-ons which could be spent before Friday's deadline on a potential replacement.
It could be a busy week for Blackburn as they look to reinforce and attempt to replace Szmodics' goals. One player in particular that Rovers are looking to sign as an attacking reinforcement is Thelo Aasgaard but he is not quite the Szmodics replacement that they need.
According to Alan Nixon, Rovers are planning to sign Aasgaard from Wigan Athletic as well as fellow League One player, George Hall, from Birmingham City. The latter is someone that John Eustace knows from his time at Birmingham, but the former seems like a player that Rovers have identified as a Szmodics replacement.
Aasgaard progressed through Wigan Athletic's academy and has been a mainstay in their first team for three of the last four seasons. He predominantly plays as a number 10, like Szmodics, but can also do a job on the left wing.
There is one thing that could become an issue when attempting to sign Aasgaard and that is Wigan's valuation of the player. The Latics reportedly want £3.5 million for their attacking midfielder, which could be seen as a little steep considering Blackburn only sold Szmodics for £9 plus add-ons.
Aasgaard to Blackburn would be a sensible move for all parties but patience will be needed as it is highly unlikely that he will perform as well as Szmodics did last season.
The departure of Szmodics has left somewhat of a void in attack for Blackburn. Their first two games since the forward left has seen the side draw 2-2 and win 2-1, so they are still managing to find the goals, but there is no guarantee that they will stay consistent with it throughout the season unless a competent replacement is brought in.
Aasgaard is a fantastic number 10 at League One level and has played in the Championship but it is highly unlikely that he would be able to put up the numbers that Szmodics did last season.
The 22-year-old scored eight goals and assisted three in League One last season, and while these are decent figures in the third tier, it is not worthy of the £3.5 million price tag that Wigan have placed on him.
While Aasgaard and Szmodics are both number 10s, the former is more of a technical playmaker as opposed to the clinical finisher that Szmodics is. Blackburn now have money to spend but should spend it on someone other than the Wigan player if they are looking for a direct Szmodics replacement.
