Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Blackburn Rovers centre back Ash Phillips, a report from The Daily Mail has claimed.

Phillips has come through the academy at Blackburn, and a string of departures of injuries in the centre of Rovers’ defence, has now broken into their first-team in the past week or so.

The 17-year-old has started Blackburn’s last two games, his first appearances in senior football, and he looks set to retain his place in the side for Wednesday night’s clash with Reading.

Now it seems as though that is a game that could have a big say in the direction of Phillips’ career path.

Real Fake

According to this latest update, Tottenham are close to completing a deal for the teenager, despite interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.

It is thought that Spurs’ Director of Football Fabio Paritaci is set to watch Phillips in that clash with the Royals tonight, with the North London club waiting for Paritaci to give his approval for a deal to be done.

There is just a year remaining on Phillips’ contract at Ewood Park, meaning Blackburn do find themselves under pressure with regards to the future of the centre back.

The Verdict

This will be a major blow for Blackburn if Spurs do complete a deal for Phillips.

The centre back has certainly not looked out of place one bit since coming into the Rovers first-team this month, highlighting what an asset the teenager could be if he was to stay with the club long term.

However, it appears as though that is unlikely, and you can understand why he might want to complete a move to a club the size of Spurs, with the opportunities that could give him further down the line.

But with Darragh Lenihan and Jan Paul van Hecke yet to be replaced, and Scott Wharton and Hayden Carter out injured, this will only increase the pressure on Blackburn to go out and sign some centre backs.
