Broughton arrived at the club during the summer of 2022 - and oversaw the appointment of Jon Dahl Tomasson shortly after.

Someone impressive needed to be appointed following the departure of Tony Mowbray, who was unlucky to be let go by Rovers.

Tomasson did well for a decent chunk of his time in charge and was close to taking the club to an FA Cup semi-final during his first campaign at the club, but fell at the final hurdle against Sheffield United.

Former boss Tomasson struggled during the latter stages of his time in charge though - and that isn't a major surprise considering he had lost both Ben Brereton Diaz and Adam Wharton in the two windows that preceded his sacking.

John Eustace was appointed as his successor - and the ex-Birmingham City manager was able to keep Rovers up.

But the race for survival went down to the final day - and there are plenty of reasons why Rovers struggled during the 2023/24 season.

Looking back, some of their recruitment in recent windows hasn't been brilliant, but Broughton has only had limited resources to work with throughout his time at the Lancashire club.

Gregg Broughton set to leave Blackburn Rovers

According to Nixon, Broughton is set to be the next key figure to leave the club.

The same report has stated that he is set to be replaced, signalling that current boss Eustace won't have full control over the club's recruitment this summer, even with Broughton set to depart.

During his time at the club, there have been a few transfer mishaps, with the signings of Lewis O'Brien, Ethan Brierley and Duncan McGuire all falling through due to reported paperwork issues.

Broughton came under fire for this, though some fans didn't believe he was a key reason why these deals had fallen through.

Club secretary Ian Silvester has already been dismissed - and Broughton now looks set to follow.

Gregg Broughton can count himself lucky if he's sacked by Blackburn Rovers

Broughton can count himself unlucky if he does leave.

He may not have been perfect during his time at Ewood Park, but he fronted up to the media when required and took responsibility when things went wrong.

This is more than can be said for some other key figures at the club, so Broughton can leave with his head held high if he does depart.

It also can't be forgotten that he oversaw the addition of Sammie Szmodics, who looks set to be sold on for a very healthy profit in the next couple of years.

There are many others who should be leaving before Broughton, but his departure may allow him to take up another opportunity elsewhere.
