Blackburn Rovers defender Jade Richards has signed a new professional contract with the club for next season.

The Lancashire club announced their latest squad news via their official website this morning.

Richards has spent the last two seasons with Blackburn Rovers after joining the club on a free transfer at the start of the 2020/2021 season. The defender has made 38 appearances for Gemma Donnelly’s side in the Barclays Women’s Championship while she has scored four league goals. Richards is a towering defender with real physicality which makes her a major asset in both boxes.

Blackburn Rovers boss Donnelly has been very busy in the opening weeks of the close season. The Lancashire club have now agreed new terms with nine members of their 2021/2022 squad. In addition to the new deal for Richards, Hannah Coan, Alex Brooks, Helen Seed, Emma Doyle, Lauren Thomas, Ellie Leek, Farah Crompton and Megan Hornby are now all under contract for 2022/2023.

Donnelly is yet to utilise the transfer market to bring in some fresh faces. In years gone by, the Blackburn Rovers boss has offered plenty of opportunities to young players coming out of WSL Academy League football but it remains to be seen whether she will continue to follow a similar recruitment strategy this year.
