Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has revealed that Leeds United winger Ian Poveda’s loan deal is still “rolling” and he will return to Ewood Park when he’s back fit.

The 21-year-old joined on a season-long loan in the summer and looked to have found his feet with Rovers before he fractured his ankle in the draw with Bristol City back in November.

Poveda has since returned to the Premier League club for his rehabilitation but, speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray has confirmed that he remains a Blackburn player and will return to the club when fit.

“That’s still rolling,” explained the 58-year-old coach. “We’re still paying that, he’s still one of our players but doing his rehab at Leeds which I’m fine with, it helps his living situation.

“As soon as he’s fit he’s still a contracted player to us and he’ll be back in our training situation.

“That’s still a fair way away from him playing football.

“I’m content that he’s at Leeds at the moment but that will change, maybe four to six weeks, let’s wait and see whether he can come back and have some impact later on.”

Blackburn have added two new reinforcements as they look to maintain their promotion push in the second half of the campaign, with attacker Dilan Markanday joining permanently from Tottenham and right-back Deyovaisio Zeefuik signing on loan from Hertha Berlin.

So far, the Ewood Park outfit have been able to hold onto their key players despite Leeds being among the sides linked with a move for both striker Ben Brereton Diaz and midfielder Joe Rothwell.

The Verdict

This is good news from a Blackburn perspective as it seems Poveda will return to their squad for the Championship run-in – assuming his recovery goes as planned.

The Leeds winger was just starting to find form at Ewood Park ahead of the injury and should, at the very least, be a useful option for Mowbray late in games.

His dynamism and direct running will make him a nightmare for tired defenders, particularly if he’s being brought on fresh from the bench late on.

With Markanday also joining the club this month and Reda Khadra seemingly set to stay, Mowbray will have some exciting young wide players to choose from.
