The recent Ballon d’Or rankings have stirred up the world of football. While a significant majority feel that Lionel Messi thoroughly deserved his seventh Golden Ball, an equally large contingent feel that it was undeserved.

The claims come off the back of a wonderful season to Robert Lewandowski’s name. In his sensational season, the Polish striker broke Gerd Muller’s historical record in addition to tallying over 60 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been Messi’s biggest competitor over the past decade, finished 6th in the rankings and, as one would expect, took to social media to reveal his true feelings.

The Portuguese international liked and commented on a post made by a fan page that spoke extensively about how Messi did not deserve the Ballon d’Or. The social media post argued that Ronaldo had a scintillating season and was robbed of the award by the PSG player.

Under the post claiming that he deserved the award, Ronaldo commented “Factos”, translating to “Facts”.

A lot has been made of the Manchester United forward’s decision to openly declare his stand on the situation. However, the truth remains that his season, both by numbers and performances, he was nowhere close to the accomplishments of either Messi or Lewandowski.

In response to Ronaldo’s unexpected public reaction, Jorge Messi posted a photo of his son with the historic seventh golden ball. Under the post, he wrote “Bla bla bla…continuen”, which obviously translates to “continue”.

The response from Messi’s father is clearly a direct jab at the Portuguese. Nevertheless, Messi is now the only footballer with seven Ballon d’Ors, two more than Cristiano Ronaldo.
