Bitter war of words between PSG and Kylian Mbappé escalates amid rape enquiry in Sweden

Since their divorce at the start of July, Kylian Mbappé (25) and Paris Saint-Germain have struggled to cut their ties. The former remains in dispute with the latter over unpaid wages towards the end of his seven-year stint at the club.

Mbappé is demanding €55m in unpaid wages and bonuses from his former club. After the LFP’s legal commission decided in favour of the France captain, PSG contested the ruling. Their argument is based on a gentleman’s agreement, which was stated publically in January 2024, when Mbappé said that, whatever his decision, either to leave on a free or extend his deal, “we (Mbappé and PSG) have managed to protect all parties”.

Due to Les Parisiens’ appeal, there will be a hearing later on Tuesday. On the eve of this hearing, the tension between the now-Real Madrid forward and the reigning Ligue 1 champions has ramped up. On Monday afternoon, RMC Sport relayed information from Swedish media Aftonbladet, which reported that a police enquiry for a suspected rape, which happened in the same hotel that Mbappé stayed in Stockholm earlier this week, had been opened.

His trip to Stockholm controversially coincided with Les Bleus’ UEFA Nations League match against Israel, which he missed due to recovery from a thigh injury. The report from Aftonbladet in Sweden did not mention Mbappé as being a subject of the police’s investigation, unlike a report from Expressen later that evening, which stated the contrary. Speaking to the AFP, the Real Madrid forward’s entourage stated that they were unaware that he was the subject of any enquiry. Confirming the enquiry, the Swedish prosecutor did not mention Mbappé’s name.

In response to RMC Sport’s aggregation of the Aftonbladet piece, Mbappé denounced the report as “FAKE NEWS” before adding, “It is all becoming really predictable, just by chance, the day before the hearing,” referencing Tuesday’s hearing with the LFP and PSG regarding the unpaid wages.

In his tweet, he is hinting that PSG are responsible for creating the story as a means of sullying his image. Speaking via L’Équipe, PSG did not mince their words with their reply:  “Honestly, it’s shameful. We’re going to ignore it and keep our class.” Tensions will be higher than ever when the two parties come together later today.
