Yves Bissouma is a top talent but Liverpool should do “everything in their power” to keep Georginio Wijnaldum.
That is the view of former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of the Reds signing Brighton midfielder Bissouma in the next transfer window.
Football Insider understands Wijnaldum has verbally indicated to Barcelona that he will join them at the end of the season upon the expiration of his contract at Anfield.
According to The Times, Jurgen Klopp has since identified Bissouma as the ideal replacement for the departing Netherlands international.
It is reported that the Mali international has informed Brighton of his wish to leave this summer.
Robinson suggested Bissouma is not up to the level of Wijnaldum.
“It is going to be really interesting to see what Liverpool are going to do,” he told Footbal Insider.
“They will need to sign a replacement for Wijnaldum if he ends up leaving, which looks increasingly likely.
“I find it strange that they have not done everything within their power to keep hold of him given the cost of replacing him. It’s bizarre to me.
“Bissouma is a very good player. He was amazing against Leeds. I don’t think he’ll be at Brighton next season. They will have a big task keeping hold of him.
“Whether he is up to Liverpool’s standards I’m not sure but he is definitely a top half of the Premier League player. He will look and play better in a better team with better players around him.”
