Birmingham City have agreed a deal to sign 20-year-old goalkeeper Brian Kinnear after he was released by Rangers at the end of the season, according to the Daily Record (16/06, 21:42).

The Blues have made a relatively slow start to Lee Bowyer’s first transfer window in charge at St Andrew’s but it appears they’re now closing in on their first signing of the summer as they look to capitalise on a decision made at Ibrox.

Rangers opted not to offer Kinnear a new deal, meaning he became a free agent at the expiration of his contract at the end of May.

The Daily Record has reported that the Championship club, who took the 20-year-old on trial last season, have now agreed a deal to sign Kinnear on a permanent contract.

The Edinburgh-born shot-stopper has developed through the Gers academy system but never featured for the senior side.

Kinnear made his professional debut during the 2020/21 campaign, having joined Annan Athletic late in the season.

The Scotland U21 international played two games for the Scottish League Two side – keeping clean sheets in both.

One question about every player in the Blues’ first-team – Can you score 100% on this?

The Verdict

This looks as though it could be a really shrewd bit of business from Birmingham, which is not something we’ve said a huge amount in recent years.

Kinnear is understood to be a highly rated keeper, as his involvement with the Scotland U21s shows, so snapping him up after his Ibrox exit could prove to be a fantastic move.

With the likes of Neil Etheridge already at the club and Connal Trueman returning from his loan move away, you feel the Scotsman is likely to join up with the U21s squad to start with.

A positive start to the summer but supporters will want to see Bowyer make changes to the senior squad.
