May is set to make the move to Birmingham after a battle for his services, with Darren Witcoop revealing that a deal to see him join the Midlands outfit is all but done.

Huddersfield were keen to sign May as Michael Duff sought a reunion with the former Cheltenham Town hot-shot, but it is Chris Davies and the Blues that have won the race after hijacking the deal, with a £775,000 offer accepted, as per Football Insider.

The 30-year-old striker won the Golden Boot in League One last season after scoring 23 goals for the Addicks, despite the fact that they finished in the bottom half in the third tier.

Birmingham's move to sign May is further evidence that the Blues intend to gain promotion straight back to the Championship next season.

Newly appointed boss Davies spoke to Birmingham Live to discuss the club's short-term ambitions shortly after he arrived at the club.

He said: "The owners have said they want us to first and foremost put a really strong squad together. There's a lot of work to be done there. They want us to push and have the best possible chance of bouncing back immediately to the Championship."

Davies left his position as assistant manager at Tottenham Hotspur to take up the role of manager at St Andrews.

The Blues have already confirmed the signing of Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, as well as being linked with a move for Rangers' centre-back Connor Goldson.

May will be the latest addition to a Birmingham squad that could turn out to be one of the strongest that we have seen in the third tier.

The forward has an incredible record in League One, having scored at least 20 goals in each of the last three seasons for Cheltenham and Charlton.

Huddersfield to miss out on Alfie May deal

New Huddersfield boss Duff worked with May during their time together at Cheltenham, and the Terriers had a bid rejected for the striker midway through June - they did eventually however have a £750,000 offer accepted, according to Pete O'Rourke.

It now appears that they are set to miss out on the signing after Birmingham hijacked the deal, with perhaps the allure of the St. Andrew's outfit being too big to turn down.

Huddersfield have already signed right wing-back Lasse Sorensen from Lincoln City, who was one of the top performers in his position in League One last season, and were hoping to also add May to their squad ahead of their first season back in the third tier.

Charlton Athletic already have their eyes on Alfie May replacement

It was reported when Huddersfield first came in for May that Charlton would only agree to a sale if they had a replacement lined up.

The Addicks have recently been linked with Ipswich Town forward Gassan Ahadme and Coventry City striker Matt Godden.

Presumably, Charlton are ready to bring in at least one new striker as May is poised to make his move to the Midlands.

Chuks Aneke and Miles Leaburn missed large parts of last season through injury, so it is vitally important that Charlton have enough options up front ahead of next season.
