City are interested in signing the former England international.
Birmingham City have made a surprise move to sign former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to reports.
Ambition is something that Blues haven't been short of ever since Knighthead completed their takeover of the club two summers ago. Every move has been made with a Premier League return in mind, and that has been no more evident at any other point than in recent months.
The signings they have made, bringing in established players across the pitch from some of Europe's top leagues, even when these players had offers from higher-ranking clubs, as was the case with Kyogo Furuhashi and Tommy Doyle, show that they don't intend to stick around for long in the Championship.
Doyle's addition was a real statement, given the Premier League minutes the 23-year-old already has under his belt, plus the promotion that he helped Sheffield United to seal in the 2022/23 campaign.
According to The Mirror, Blues are now looking into a move for another well-versed top-flight midfielder in Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The national publication has said that Birmingham have made an offer for the 32-year-old former England international. It had been reported earlier in the window that a number of teams in England were interested in him, and that a return to the UK from his current club, Besiktas, would appeal to him.
Sky Sports have since said that Besiktas would be willing to let him leave for free despite there being just less than a year left on his current deal.
Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to the Turkish side in August 2023 but has been hit by injuries with the same regularity that slowed down, and eventually brought an end to, his time with Liverpool.
He has been involved in full training with Besiktas, though, so he should be at least close to being fully fit and ready to perform for Birmingham, if their offer is accepted. The Super Lig side are willing to let him leave, as per The Mirror.
Chris Davies isn't exactly scrambling to find players to sit in the middle of the pitch right now.
With Doyle, who is yet to make his first start for the club, Tomoki Iwata, Seung-Ho Paik, Marc Leonard and Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Blues are well stocked in Oxlade-Chamberlain's position, but that same case could've been made for the strikers.
Even with Jay Stansfield, Alfie May and Lyndon Dykes, Birmingham still wanted to improve in this area of the pitch, so they went and bought Kyogo and Martin Ducksch - the latter move was exclusively revealed by Football League World. Blues have even been linked with the Championship's all-time single-season goalscoring record holder, Aleksandar Mitrovic.
They're not resting on their laurels. They're not hoping their players will be good enough to adapt to the Championship. They're going out and buying options that will make them competitive in the top flight. And with the money they have, why shouldn't they launch ambitious moves like their reported one for Oxlade-Chamberlain?
