The FA have confirmed the charge for both clubs for the breach of rule E20.1 after a melee broke out in stoppage time in their league fixture.

George Hirst’s controversial penalty led to a brawl behind the Birmingham goal, with the strike levelling the scores at 1-1 after the 90th minute.

It led to the two teams drawing their opening game of the campaign, with both clubs eyeing a possible promotion push this season.

The FA have written on their website to confirm that both Championship sides have been charged with a breach of their regulations.

It is alleged that Birmingham and Ipswich both failed to behave in a proper manner around the 95th minute of their match.

The two clubs have until 15 August to respond to the charge, with a potential fine coming their way.

This was the first game of the entire Championship season, with broadcaster Sky Sports electing to pick it as the sole match in the Friday evening slot for the weekend.

It was also the first fixture back in the division for the two teams, with Ipswich suffering relegation from the top flight last season, while Birmingham earned promotion from League One.

It remains unclear just yet how the pair will opt to respond to the FA’s charge, with a deadline of Friday being given for their reply.

Birmingham and Ipswich’s 1-1 draw

Birmingham took the lead in the second half through Jay Stansfield, who bagged the goal in the 55th minute.

Ipswich struggled to make any clear openings in the final third, but Hirst was able to calmly convert his stoppage time penalty to secure a point for Kieran McKenna’s side.

The goal was the visitor’s only shot on target in the entire game, with Ipswich set to face Southampton at home on 17 August in a 12pm kick-off in their next fixture.

Next up for the Blues is a trip to face Blackburn Rovers on 16 August with a 3pm start.

Birmingham and Ipswich have no reply for FA charge

There is nothing Birmingham and Ipswich can really do now that they’ve been charged, as the evidence is clear for what happened on Friday night.

Tempers flared after a controversial referee decision led to the penalty that ultimately saw the visitors equalise with.

The managers will need to talk to their players about letting their emotions get the better of them to this extent, but it’s understandable such an incident will happen when it’s so late in the match and there’s a result on the line.

It was still a good result for both teams, and they are likely to accept whatever fine will probably come their way as a result of this charge.
