Sheffield Wednesday have had a clear and obvious improvement under new head coach Danny Rohl since his appointment in October to replace Xisco Munoz, and there is a growing feeling that he could in-fact lead the Owls to safety in the Championship.

It will still be very much a long shot after the start to the season the South Yorkshire outfit had under previous boss Munoz, but they have already won three times under the young German and taken a point off Leicester City, which is more than most teams have done against the Foxes.

There has been a new-found energy for the most part about the Owls though, even when they have been losing, but they still need to make a few changes in the upcoming January transfer window.

And according to Alan Nixon via Patreon, controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri is willing to sanction the signing of an expensive striker, and the Thai businessman could even pay up to £30,000 a week in wages for that player in question.

That would likely make such a player the top earner at Hillsborough and somewhere around the Barry Bannan bracket, and Nixon claims that Birmingham City's Scott Hogan is on the transfer shortlist.

Birmingham's Hogan transfer stance boosts Sheffield Wednesday chances

Hogan was once a prolific Championship goalscorer, hitting the back of the net 14 times in 25 appearances for Brentford in the 2016-17 season before a big-money move to Aston Villa in January 2017, but he's failed to hit those heights since.

He has had two 10-goal seasons with Birmingham since, but there has been a plethora of missed chances in most seasons in-front of goal for the Blues, and Wayne Rooney has quickly decided that the 31-year-old isn't really part of his plans.

Despite starting the season under John Eustace in his first-choice 11 players, Hogan's playing has quickly dropped under his replacement Wayne Rooney - after starting against Middlesbrough in his first match in charge, the Republic of Ireland international has come off the bench four times and stayed on it for five games.

And according to Darren Witcoop of the Sunday Mirror, Birmingham will make Hogan up for grabs in January with his contract expiring in the summer, which will only boost Wednesday and Chansiri's chances of landing the experienced forward next month.

Hogan may not be a good fit for Sheffield Wednesday - and may stand in Cadamarteri's way

Considering how profligate Hogan has been for a while now for Birmingham - even with his 10 league goals last season - it isn't a surprise that they are looking to get rid ahead of his contract expiring.

With their fresh American funding from a summer takeover, Birmingham can afford to get better at the top end of the pitch, but getting his salary off the books will be very helpful.

For Sheffield Wednesday though, who tend to only play one striker, he may not be the man they need to help score them goals to get them out of the relegation zone.

Hogan has missed many big chances over the past season-and-a-half, and there's an argument to be had that perhaps a top League One club would be more befitting.

Wednesday may need to clear out their attacking options though, with Lee Gregory looking like he's come to the end of the road at Hillsborough, whilst loanee Ashley Fletcher could be sent back to Watford after making very little impact.

The player that Hogan's arrival could be impacted the most though is Bailey Cadamarteri, who is getting plenty of game-time under Rohl and has scored twice already since his emergence into the first-team.

The 18-year-old is more-than proving his worth in the Championship right now, and if Chansiri is to spend big on wages to bring Hogan to the club, then there may be an expectation to give him starts from the get-go.

Many supporters have already expressed their concerns over a potential deal for Hogan as the money could be spent better elsewhere on other positions, and the faith should be kept with Cadamarteri rather than putting money into a player over the age of 30 that looks nowhere near as effective as he used to be.
