Birmingham City have appointed Amy Merricks as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from the Blues this evening.

Merricks joins Birmingham City after most recently leading the England Under-19s side. She replaces former Blues boss Darren Carter who left his position last week after more than two years in the role.

Merricks gained coaching experience working in various roles at former club Brighton & Hove Albion. She worked as a development team head coach and first team assistant manager during her time with the Sussex club. The 30-year-old spent more than five years of her spell with Brighton & Hove Albion working with manager Hope Powell who is now the women’s technical director at Birmingham City.

With Birmingham City’s promotion hopes now over for another season, Merricks will be tasked with building a side capable of winning the Barclays Women’s Championship title during her three years at St Andrew’s.

After joining the Blues, Merricks said “It’s an honour to join Birmingham City at a critical point in their journey and I’m excited to get straight to work with such a talented group of players.

“After hearing the ambitions of Garry Cook, Hope Powell and the Board, as well as knowing the steep history Birmingham already has in the women’s game, I was immediately attracted to the opportunity of driving this club forward and further than it has been before.”

Merricks officially starts work with Birmingham City on Tuesday morning.
