Birmingham City have announced the departure of head coach Darren Carter.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official press release from the Blues this afternoon. It has been reported that Carter will pursue other opportunities away from the football club.

The 40-year-old was appointed Birmingham City head coach in November 2021. He took over following the sacking of former boss Scott Booth. Carter was unable to save Birmingham City from relegation to the Barclays Women’s Championship in 2021/2022 but he has played an instrumental role in turning negative perceptions of the club’s women’s team around.

Under Carter’s leadership, Birmingham City missed out on an immediate return to the Barclays Women’s Super League by just a single point last season. The Blues ended that campaign with an impressive seven-match winning run.

Birmingham City started the current season with a hangover from their narrow failure in 2022/2023; they only picked up one point from their opening four games. The Blues recovered and edged back into contention for promotion, although it is now virtually impossible to end the campaign top of the table. With the club’s season virtually over, Carter has opted for a career change.

Carter leaves Birmingham City in fifth place in the Barclays Women’s Championship table with three games left to play.
