Billy Koumetio is a name the average football fan probably won’t recognise.

The Frenchman is a centre-back who currently plays for Liverpool and he’s made two appearances for the senior side.

There are high hopes for the 20-year-old, although he’s just returned to Merseyside after a difficult loan spell with Austria Vienna.

Koumetio played only 11 times for the Austrian Bundesliga outfit and didn’t exactly set the world alight, with starts very hard to come by.

As such, his season-long loan to Austria Vienna was cut short, so he returned to Liverpool’s Under-21 side for their match against Paris Saint-Germain Under-21s in the Premier League International Cup.

And it was certainly a triumphant comeback by Koumetio.

The Lyon-born defender was exceptional in Wednesday evening’s match, scoring twice in a 4-2 victory for the Reds.

Koumetio’s first goal was scored in just the ninth minute of play and to say it was a cracker would be something of an understatement.

Actually, it would be a humongous understatement.

That’s because Koumetio decided to do a fantastic impression of Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso by scoring from inside his own half.

Koumetio spotted PSG goalkeeper Lucas Lavallee way off his line and took full advantage of the situation.

Footage of the stunning goal didn’t emerge on Wednesday – but don’t worry, Thursday delivered the goods.

Liverpool Academy writer Lewis Brower uploaded the video to Twitter and it didn’t disappoint one bit.

What. A. Strike.

It really was shades of Alonso versus both Newcastle United and Luton Town. To be honest, the hit from Koumetio is probably the best of the three.

What has Jurgen Klopp said about Koumetio?

After Koumetio debuted for Liverpool’s senior side in a 2020/21 Champions League match vs FC Midtjylland, Klopp heaped praise on the defender.

He said: “Billy the kid. He doesn’t look like a kid! In my opinion, his face looks like a kid but then all the rest is like, wow! I told him, ‘Last time I saw you, you were like 20 centimetres less if I’m right’. Yes, he’s a big talent.”

The kid is clearly a huge prospect and if Liverpool’s injury problems continue to mount in the coming weeks, we will likely see him take a place on the bench in Premier League games.
