Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour bossed the game for Scotland versus England last week, and the excitement grew about the prospect of the youngster lighting up the rest of the Euros for Scotland.

Unfortunately what swiftly followed was hugely frustrating for the rising Blues star.

After testing positive for Covid-19, he was then forced to self-isolate for the next 10 days, missing Scotland’s crucial final group game against Croatia.

Of course, there is no guarantee that even if Gilmour played he could have done anything to change Scotland’s fortunes, but it was also clear that Scotland looked a lot better team with Gilmour in the side.

On the plus side, this was Gilmour’s first major international tournament at senior level, and you know it will be the first of many.

However, he was naturally very upset and gutted about missing out on the final game, and he has opened up about this via his Instagram account, as reported by The Glasgow Times.

He said:

“Unbelievable experience to play in my first major international tournament over the past couple of weeks.

“On a personal note, gutted to miss out on our final game due to Covid – thank you for all your messages.

“We hope this is the first of many major international tournaments over the coming years…. you all deserve it and we hope to make you proud in the future. Thank you Scotland.”
