Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is reportedly set to make a shock return to the club.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is reportedly set to make a shock return to the club as optimism builds about a potential takeover at Hillsborough.
That's according to BBC Radio Sheffield journalist Rob Staton, who claims that Rohl is preparing to come back to his role at Wednesday amid increasing confidence that a takeover deal can be completed within weeks.
Rohl took over at Hillsborough in October 2023 at a time when the Owls were sitting bottom of the Championship table with just three points to their name, but he somehow managed to keep the club in the division before guiding them to a respectable 12th-placed finish last season.
However, Rohl's relationship with Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri became strained after he was denied a move to Southampton in December, and the pair were involved in a bitter public dispute during the January transfer window.
Having informed the Owls of his desire to leave the club back in April, Rohl did not return for the start of pre-season training last month after a summer of speculation over his future, and it was even claimed that he was in negotiations over a severance package to terminate his contract, but he will now make a surprise return to his role with the South Yorkshire outfit.
Rohl has been linked with a host of other clubs this summer, including Southampton, Middlesbrough, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, but he has been unable to find a new job, with his high release clause proving to be a stumbling block for many of his suitors.
With his tenure at Hillsborough looking set to come to an end, Rohl was said to be in the frame to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at Leicester City last month, and the fee needed to release him from his contract with the Owls had been reduced to just £1 million, but he is no longer in the running to take over at the King Power Stadium as the Foxes close in on the appointment of ex-QPR manager Marti Cifuentes.
The uncertainty over Rohl's future has been just one problem during what has been a nightmare summer for Wednesday, and, having failed to pay the wages of players and staff on time in May and June, the club have been hit with a three-window transfer fee ban, while they are also currently under three separate transfer embargoes.
In a desperate bid to raise funds, Chansiri was reportedly preparing to start a fire sale of some of the Owls' key players, and star winger Djeidi Gassama is set to join Scottish giants Rangers for a fee of close to £2.5 million.
With Chansiri's high valuation of the club deterring potential buyers, there seemed to be little hope of a takeover for Wednesday, but that appears to have changed as, according to the BBC, "non-disclosure agreements are being signed and proper process is taking place", and a deal could be completed "potentially within weeks".
As optimism increases that the Owls could soon be under new ownership, Rohl has now decided to return to work at Hillsborough, and it comes just days after his assistant, Henrik Pedersen, signed a contract extension to remain with the club.
After he failed to report back for pre-season training, it looked as though Rohl's days at Wednesday were numbered, particularly amid reports that he was negotiating his exit from the club, so his return is certainly an unexpected development.
Having frequently discussed his possible next move with the German press over the summer, including stating his desire to manage in the Bundesliga "as soon as possible", Rohl will have bridges to build with the Owls fan base, but there is no doubt that he is an excellent manager at Championship level, and his imminent return is a huge boost for the club ahead of the new season.
Most importantly, Rohl's decision to come back to Hillsborough suggests that a takeover may be on the cards imminently, and that will offer some much-needed hope to Wednesday supporters after a turbulent summer.
