Manchester United have been handed a potential stumbling block in the pursuit of their next manager.
The Red Devils are currently languishing 14th in the Premier League table with just 11 points from nine games.
The club have also struggled in the Europa League with draws against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce. They squandered leads in each of those outings.
United decided to part ways with manager Erik ten Hag as a result. They are now in negotiations with Sporting CP regarding Ruben Amorim.
Amorim has already given the green light to become United’s next manager. The club are prepared to pay the £8.3 million release clause in his contract, but a move is not straightforward.
Daily Mail claims Amorim’s start date at United could be delayed for several weeks. His contract has a notice period, which is reportedly for a ‘number of weeks rather than days’.
The news could be a huge setback for the Red Devils, who were initially looking to have Amorim in charge for Sunday’s crucial Premier League game against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Amorim may not make his managerial debut for the Red Devils until November 24 against Ipswich Town if Sporting are reluctant to release him.
Sporting continued their stunning start to the season with a 3-1 win over Nacional in the Taca da Liga quarter-final last night. Amorim received warm applause from the fans
The 39-year-old confirmed United’s interest in the post-match press conference but added that nothing is decided at the moment. This could be related to the notice period in his deal.
This would be bad news for the Red Devils. The hierarchy are in constant negotiations with Sporting, and they will hope to find a solution with a compensation package.
