Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny insisted that he was not thinking about his club side ahead of Poland’s World Cup match against an Argentina side featuring Inter striker Lautaro Martinez.

The two countries face off in the deciding match in Group C of the tournament in Qatar on Wednesday, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the knockout stages of the competition and Poland currently leading the group with four points.

With Szczesny likely to come up against Martinez at Stadium 974, the former Roma and Arsenal goalkeeper refused to be drawn on the significance of a Derby d’Italia between Juventus and Inter on the pitch, in an interview published in today’s newspaper edition of Repubblica.

“Let’s not reduce everything to Juve-Inter, it has nothing to do with it, we’re here with our national teams and we’re only thinking about them,” the 32-year-old insisted.

The match against Argentina will also see Poland come up against Lionel Messi, but Szczesny insisted that he was relishing the opportunity to try to stop the Paris Saint-Germain star, after Poland earned a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia yesterday.

“You come to the World Cup to play against the best players in the world.

“With all due respect to Saudi Arabian players, I want to compete against the best and Messi is definitely one of them. It’s a great stimulus.”

The goalkeeper saved a penalty against Saudi Arabia, as Poland held on for their first win at the World Cup, following a 0-0 draw against Mexico in their first match.

“The second save I made was much more difficult. And really decisive. We can’t score goals, so saving a penalty at the World Cup is absolutely the best a goalkeeper can do,” he concluded.
