Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted to being in complete disbelief over one decision INEOS signed off on last summer.

It’ll come as no surprise to Manchester United fans to learn that he’s discussing the sale of one of his most trusted lieutenants throughout his time at Old Trafford in the form of Scott McTominay, who pulled the curtains on his 22-year association with the club when he departed for Napoli.

The Red Devils received £25.7 million of straight profit by facilitating the academy graduate’s sale in a deal which they may have since come to regret, due to his scintillating form for the Serie A outfit.

After overseeing a career-best goalscoring campaign for United (10 in all competitions) throughout 2023/2024, McTominay went on to hit the ground running in his new environment, becoming an instant hit with the Napoli faithful.

The Scotsman has proven invaluable to Antonio Conte, with his decisive goal contributions directly influencing the side’s Scudetto charge; when looking to capitalise on title-chasing Inter Milan dropping points to Roma in matchweek 34, McTominay scored a brace later that night to seal a crucial 2-0 win over Torino. Now, Napoli hold a three-point advantage atop the table.

In total, he has scored 11 goals – a new personal best – and contributed four assists in 31 league appearances.

Such game-defining form certainly wouldn’t have gone amiss at United this campaign, given they’ve just overseen their 16th Premier League defeat and sit 15th-placed in the table.

At the time of the midfielder’s exit, United were negotiating the transfer of Manuel Ugarte – a player whose arrival would directly lead to McTominay’s minutes being limited.

When pressed on the current affairs at his former club, Solskjaer said of the ex-Red: “I have to say, how you can sell Scott is beyond me. For me, Fred and Scott together [were] really lads that you’d put your hat on every day to give 100 per cent. Absolutely nailed on.”
