Bruno Genesio believes that Lille OSC’s comeback victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday was better than the shock win over Real Madrid earlier this month.
Whilst LOSC are yet to fully convince in Ligue 1, they are flying high in the Champions League. After losing their first match in the new-look competition, against Sporting CP, Lille bounced back, beating Real Madrid at home. Despite that win, they went to Madrid, to face their city rivals Atletico Madrid, as the underdog, especially after an underwhelming draw against AS Monaco on Friday.
Reacting to that result, Genesio said that there was “nothing encouraging” in that performance, whilst the former Stade Rennais manager worryingly suggested that his instructions weren’t getting through to his squad. However, there was a big reaction in Madrid.
Having gone behind in the first half, Les Dogues bounced back, levelling through Edon Zhegrova, before a late brace from Jonathan David. For Genesio, that result was better than the one against the reigning Champions League champions.
“This victory and this performance is better than the one against Real Madrid. We were better than Atletico,” evaluated Genesio, whose substitutions changed the course of the match.
“I was quite confident at half-time. I said that we would have chances to get back into it. The players that came on were decisive,” said the Lille manager.
