Although the spending may not have hit the heights of recent seasons, there are still some exciting players in new surroundings in Serie A this season.
We look at the best XI who have moved this summer.
Bayern Munich to Inter, €6m
One of the Bundesliga’s most reliable shot-stoppers of the past decade has some big gloves to fill at San Siro, coming in to replace André Onana after his move to Manchester United.
Lille to Juventus, €12m
Admittedly, this may be cheating just a little as the USA international is set to play as a right wing-back rather than a traditional full-back for Massimiliano Allegri but we simply couldn’t leave out a Weah being back in Serie A.
Eintracht Frankfurt to Roma, free
Roma have done some outstanding low-cost business this summer but this may be the pick of the bunch as they beat stiff competition from several big names across Europe to the signature of Ndicka who has excelled in recent years for Frankfurt, where he also won a Europa League.
RB Bragantino to Napoli, €10m
The Brazilian looks set to be the man tasked with replacing Kim Min-jae, who bowed out on a high at Napoli after just one season and a lot of eyes will be on him to see if he can keep the Scudetto holders as defensively resilient as they were last year.
Empoli to Fiorentina, €10m
One of the most impressive full-backs in Serie A for the last two seasons, the man with inexhaustible energy has deserved a move up for some time and is sure to prove a big hit as he makes the short transfer across Tuscany.
AZ to Milan, €19m
If pre-season is anything to go by, and it is very early days, Milan have done some astute business with this acquisition. The 24-year-old played in all of his side’s 54 games last season, a testament to his endurance and energy, and his fast, forward running will prove pivotal for the Rossoneri this season.
Lyon to Roma, free
Another Roma free transfer, another exciting addition to Serie A. Aouar exploded onto the scene as a teenager with Lyon and seemed destined for big heights but his progress has stagnated a little of late. At 25 though, there is still plenty of time for him to fulfil his undoubted potential.
Eintracht Frankfurt to Lazio, free
Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri must still be thanking his lucky stars that he has ended up with the Japan international who was courted by seemingly everyone from Barcelona to Milan after choosing to let his Frankfurt contract expire. A joy to watch with the ball at his feet, he was exactly the kind of marquee name that was needed following Sergej Milinković-Savić’s departure.
Villarreal to Milan, €20m
Milan have been busy this summer but their biggest money signing is the Nigerian winger who arrives for a fee which could rise as high as €28m. He is a clear upgrade on their previous right side options and between him and Rafael Leão, opposing full-backs are in for a rough ride against the Rossoneri.
River Plate to Fiorentina, €25.5m
There have been several exciting striker additions this summer with Atalanta signing duo Gianluca Scamacca and El Bilal Touré, while Genoa have brought Italy international Mateo Retegui to Serie A from Argentina but it is another making that move who promises to be a very interesting inclusion, with Fiorentina (who love an Argentine striker of course) signing the prolific youngster nicknamed El Vikingo from River Plate.
Borussia Mönchengladbach to Inter, free
While he will play a more central role for Simone Inzaghi, we had to find a way of getting the Frenchman into this side. Like Weah, his arrival sees the son of a Serie A legend gracing Italy’s top flight and having signed on a free, this could prove to be the best of business anyone does this summer.
