Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that Chelsea have been the “greatest team in England” in recent years – but does that stack up to scrutiny?

The Argentinian coach first arrived in English football in January 2013, when Chelsea were undoubtedly among the most successful clubs in the country. Six months prior they’d won their first Champions League. However, at that point the balance of power was shifting.

Manchester City had claimed their first Premier League title the year before and would win their second in Pochettino’s first full season at Southampton.

“In the last 10, 12, 15 years, Chelsea is the greatest team in England,” Pochettino said in his first interview as Chelsea manager.

“I know very well the Premier League and what the culture of Chelsea means. I think our fans are excited to again be on the road of trying to win.”

It is true that during Roman Abramovich’s 19 years in charge of Chelsea, the club picked up more silverware than any other club, with the Blues lifting five Premier League trophies, five FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions League and two Europa League trophies.

But things shifted somewhat during the latter half of Abramovich’s time as owner, in which Man City began to flex their muscles.

Over the past decade, particularly during Pep Guardiola’s time at the helm, City have enjoyed one of the most dominant periods in the history of English football, claiming five of the last six Premier League titles and matching Manchester United’s historic treble achievement last term.

Chelsea face something of an uncertain future in the post-Abramovich era. Todd Boehly has sanctioned more lavish investments than ever, but they finished 12th last term, failing to qualify for European competition entirely.
