Paul Robinson heaped praise on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his performance against Leeds United on Saturday.

The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 26-year-old was “outstanding” in the 1-0 defeat and could be “back to his best”.

Pickford has been heavily scrutinised over the past 18 months for his performances and was taken out of the firing line at Newcastle United earlier this month by Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian manager’s man management looks to have paid dividends with the England international producing a number of eye-catching saves in Saturday’s loss against Leeds.

The shot-stopper has also retained the backing of England manager Gareth Southgate this year and would appear to be first choice ahead of next summer’s European Championship.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Pickford’s performance on Saturday, Robinson said: “I thought both goalkeepers at Goodison Park were brilliant.

“It could have been a very different scoreline.

“Jordan Pickford was outstanding for Everton. It was the best performance I have seen from him in a long time.

“He was calm, composed and looked like an international goalkeeper. On that performance it looks like he is back to his best.”

Pickford arrived at Goodison Park in a £26million deal from Sunderland in July 2017 – the sixth highest fee ever paid for a goalkeeper.

The 1-0 loss against Leeds leaves the Toffees seventh in the Premier League table.
