No goalkeeper has made more saves in a Premier League match this season than Bernd Leno managed against 20th-placed Watford on Sunday.

Leno made eight saves against Watford at the weekend, despite conceding two goals. According to WhoScored, no goalkeeper has managed more saves than that in a single Premier League match this season.

That stat is pretty embarrassing, even considering the season is so young. The record for saves wasn’t set when Liverpool or City faced a team in the bottom half, but when the bottom team faced Arsenal.

Arsenal’s defending can certainly be a bit of a lottery. If you like the thrill of random chance, try Bettilt Casino. It would be nice if the Gunners could avoid gambling on the pitch though. To allow so many shots on goal is a sign of just how poorly the team are set up defensively.

Leno argued after the game that many of Watford’s shots were from a range or angle where they would always have been unlikely to score, and that’s a fair point.

The hosts also had some huge chances though, particularly for the two goals and what should have been a late third from Abdoulaye Doucoure.

The goalkeeper isn’t going to keep many clean sheets if Arsenal continue to lead the top-five league charts for shots faced.
