Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following a controversial tweet aimed at team-mate Benjamin Mendy.
On 22 September, Silva used his official Twitter account to compare a childhood photo of Mendy to the cartoon mascot of Spanish chocolate peanut brand Conguitos.
The tweet was swiftly deleted sparked numerous allegations of racism and the FA contacted Manchester City, Silva and Mendy to seek their observations on the matter.
And on Wednesday, the FA announced that the Portugal international has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3 as the tweet has been deemed insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.
The FA also say the activity constitutes an “Aggravated Breach”, as it included reference, whether expressed or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin.
Silva has until 9 October to respond to the charge but he could now face a ban and/or a fine for his conduct, and may also be required to take an educational course.
