Chelsea will go into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final with an away goal after drawing 1-1 with Real Madrid at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.
Christian Pulisic gave the away side the lead before Karim Benzema equalised with a thumping volley.
Scorers: Benzema 29‘; Pulisic 14′.
The visitors should’ve been in front inside the first ten minutes but somehow Thibaut Courtois denied Timo Werner from six yards out.
Christian Pulisic did draw first blood for Thomas Tuchel’s side moments later when Antonio Rudiger’s long ball found the American inside the area, before he waltzed past Courtois and passed the ball into the back of the net.
The Blues looked like they were going to run away with the tie at that stage but were sent a warning sign when out of nothing Karim Benzema clipped the outside of the post with a driven shot from 25 yards out.
It was a warning that they didn’t heed as Benzema levelled proceedings in the 29th minute.
A well-worked corner made it’s way to the far post where Éder Militão flicked it into the path of the Frenchman, who turned and smashed a sensational volley into the back of the net.
Chances were at a premium in the second half with neither side willing to take too much of a risk but Raphaël Varane came close to strengthening Real’s position with a header in the dying minutes which flashed just wide.
The teams will reconvene for the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday May 5.
