Darren Bent has urged Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks to join Newcastle United in January to get guaranteed playing time.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker insisted the 24-year-old needs to play if he wants to represent England at next year’s European Championships.
As revealed by Football Insider, Winks is set to push for a move away – either on loan or permanently – from north London in January if he cannot force his way back into Jose Mourinho’s starting XI.
The Athletic report Steve Bruce is keen to bolster his midfield ranks and Bent has claimed they could be one of many potential suitors for Winks.
He told Football Insider: “To be fair to (Jose) Mourinho, I do think he is quite honest and he’s quite fair – I mean, Danny Rose would probably beg to differ.
“I think for Harry Winks, I think there will be will be takers for him, even a Newcastle, he could go to Newcastle and play so there will be options for him in January.
“It’s important he doesn’t waste half a season in and out the team, not playing well while people like Kalvin Phillips, every week, if he’s fit, he plays. Declan Rice, if he’s fit, he plays.
“It’s one of them, you can’t afford it, in these years leading up to a major tournament, you can’t afford to waste time.”
While on international duty last week Winks opened up about his “difficult” situation at his boyhood club
He admitted that he needs to play more regularly for Spurs if he is to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championships next summer.
In other news, Newcastle United have been told to get rid of a star player after “disrespectful” comments.
