Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has been honored as he was named Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) coach of the month for August.

This comes after the South African tactician guided the Harambee stars to the quarterfinals of the recently concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN).

It was the first time Kenya advanced to the quarterfinals of a major tournament since doing so in 1987 during the Fourth All Africa Games in Nairobi, where they fell to Egypt in the final.

Interestingly, the East African nation was making its debut in the CHAN tournament, participating as co-hosts along with neighboring countries Tanzania and Uganda.

McCarthy qualified Kenya for the knockout stages as group leaders after victories over eventual winners Morocco, DR Congo and Zambia, while sharing spoils with Angola.

Now, the Bafana Bafana legend will shift his focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Gambia on 05 September, before facing Seychelles four days later.

Kenya’s chances of sealing qualification to the global showpiece are slim as they are currently in fourth place in group F standings, having accumulated six points from six games played.

With four matches remaining, McCarthy’s side trails table toppers Ivory Coast with a staggering 10 points and second-placed Gabon with nine points.
