Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola got quite the shock at his press conference on Friday.
City left-back Benjamin Mendy is currently still out with a knee injury and will not be fit in time to face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
On Thursday, Mendyâs Instagram story indicated that he was in Barcelona, with the full consent of the club.
However, later in the day the Frenchman tagged himself over 10,000km away in Hong Kong!
Guardiola was asked by journalist Sam Lee if he knew about Mendyâs trip to the Far East, and this was his response âŠ
âI didnât know it. Fuck, heâs a lucky guy,â Guardiola said.
âHe said he was going to Paris but Hong Kong is far away.
âI donât know, I have to get Instagram because I donât know, really I donât know.
âYesterday he was in Barcelona!â
Asked if it would be okay for Mendy to be in Hong Kong, Guardiola laughed: âNo, definitely not!â
However, in true Mendy style, it was all a big practical joke.
âIt was just joking with my Uber driver,â wrote the 24-year-old on Twitter.
âI donât want no problems Pep.â
But unfortunately, Mendyâs explainer came after Guardiolaâs press conference had aired live on Sky Sports News in the UK.
The former Monaco defender has made just nine Premier League starts this season due to injury and Guardiola was unable to provide a timescale for his recovery.
âHis injury is not easy, meniscus external, and itâs not easy,â Guardiola said.
âInternal is easy, external, more complicated, he has to adapt.
âYou canât return and train for two days and then you are fit. You have to be careful.â
