Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola got quite the shock at his press conference on Friday.

City left-back Benjamin Mendy is currently still out with a knee injury and will not be fit in time to face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

On Thursday, Mendy’s Instagram story indicated that he was in Barcelona, with the full consent of the club.

However, later in the day the Frenchman tagged himself over 10,000km away in Hong Kong!

Guardiola was asked by journalist Sam Lee if he knew about Mendy’s trip to the Far East, and this was his response

“I didn’t know it. Fuck, he’s a lucky guy,” Guardiola said.

“He said he was going to Paris but Hong Kong is far away.

“I don’t know, I have to get Instagram because I don’t know, really I don’t know.

“Yesterday he was in Barcelona!”

Asked if it would be okay for Mendy to be in Hong Kong, Guardiola laughed: “No, definitely not!”

However, in true Mendy style, it was all a big practical joke.

“It was just joking with my Uber driver,” wrote the 24-year-old on Twitter.

“I don’t want no problems Pep.”

But unfortunately, Mendy’s explainer came after Guardiola’s press conference had aired live on Sky Sports News in the UK.

The former Monaco defender has made just nine Premier League starts this season due to injury and Guardiola was unable to provide a timescale for his recovery.

“His injury is not easy, meniscus external, and it’s not easy,” Guardiola said.

“Internal is easy, external, more complicated, he has to adapt.

“You can’t return and train for two days and then you are fit. You have to be careful.”
