Benik Afobe has taken to Instagram to share a message with Millwall’s supporters after sealing a permanent departure from the club.
As confirmed by Millwall’s official website, Afobe left the club via mutual consent yesterday as his contract was terminated.
As reported by London News Online, the forward is now set to finalise a move to Hatta Club who play their football in the United Arab Emirates First Division.
Afobe was signed initially by Millwall on a loan deal in 2021 from Stoke City and went on to produce some promising performances in the previous campaign for the club.
As well as scoring 12 league goals for the Lions, the forward also provided three assists for his team-mates at this level.
Due to the nature of his displays last season, Millwall opted to sign Afobe on a permanent deal from Stoke ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
Unfortunately for the forward, he was unable to deliver the goods on a consistent basis during the current term as he only managed to find the back of the net on two occasions in 19 appearances.
After his exit was announced by Millwall, Afobe decided to share a message with the club’s fans on Instagram.
“Thank you to everyone associated with the club for the past 18 months.
“I’ve enjoyed my time there with a great bunch of lads, I wish nothing but the best for you all.”
The Verdict
When you consider that Afobe ultimately failed to step up to the mark for Millwall during his second spell, it is hardly a shock that the club have opted to parted ways with him.
The 29-year-old will now be hoping to make an immediate impact for Hatta Club when he completes this particular switch.
Millwall’s attention meanwhile may now turn to securing a replacement for Afobe between now and the end of the transfer window.
By signing an individual who is capable of providing sufficient competition for Tom Bradshaw, the Lions could potentially bolster their chances of achieving a top-six finish in the Championship.
