With a victory against 11th placed Famalicao, Benfica had a good dry run as it gears up towards the Round of 16 second leg against Club Brugge on Tuesday.
A long study round kept both teams on their toes for some time, and it took twenty minutes before the first real threat of the game arrived, as Benfica goalkeeper Vlachodimos saw a long range effort whizz over. Moments later, a first chance for Benfica through David Neres went missing, but it was still Goncalo Ramos who opened the score upon the half hour mark for Benfica.
A more industrious Benfica in the second half, with an Alex Grimaldo attempt going past, and Joao Mario seeing his shot sail wide. Famalicao goalie Luiz Junior also had his share in keeping it a tight score, denying Benfica with a timely save. It was only in injury time that the Eagles finally managed to double their lead, again through Goncalo Ramos. (EV)
