Benevento coach Filippo Inzaghi conceded that his side were unable to match Inter in a 4-0 defeat on Saturday, despite claims that for an early penalty.

Inter were comprehensive victors in the Serie A match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, as an early Riccardo Improta own goal from a freekick was followed up by a second half Lautaro Martinez strike and Romelu Lukaku’s brace.

Referee Fabrizio Pasqua came under scrutiny after failing to award a spot-kick for a challenge by Andrea Ranocchia on Benevento striker Gianluca Lapadula at 1-0, but Inzaghi insisted that it had no effect on the overall outcome of the game.

“The match started badly with a freekick deflected in off one of our own players,” former AC Milan striker Inzaghi admitted in an interview with Italian television broadcaster SportMediaset after the final whistle.

“The team reacted well and there was the opportunity with Lapadula that should have been given. It would not have changed the outcome of the result though, as Inter were in great shape and we probably weren’t at our best.”

The victory for Inter sees Antonio Conte’s side remain in second place in Serie A, just two points off leaders Milan. The Nerazzurri can overtake their rivals, at least temporarily, when they visit Fiorentina on Friday evening.

Newly promoted Benevento, meanwhile, are 12th and remain seven points clear of the relegation zone.
