Gareth Southgate has recalled Ben White for England’s European Championship squad following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury.

The Brighton centre-back narrowly missed out on inclusion in the final 26-man list but has now found a way back in after the Liverpool star was ruled out after sustaining a thigh injury last week.

White, Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse had all impressed after remaining with the squad for their friendlies but Southgate has opted for the extra centre-back.

The 23-year-old won his first cap off the bench against Austria last week, playing in a deep defensive midfield role, before starting in his usual position in Sunday evening’s win over Romania.

It is an understandable decision giving the ongoing fitness concerns around Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.
