Ben Osborn has revealed his stance on his Sheffield United future with his contract coming to an end this season.

The 28-year-old is one of a dozen players who are scheduled to reach the end of their current deals this summer at Bramall Lane, as things stand.

After seeing the one-year option in his contract exercised last year, Osborn would have to renegotiate a fresh contract if his Blades career is to continue beyond the end of the current campaign.

With a takeover still ongoing, the future of those out of contract in the summer will remain up in the air. However, it’s not a situation Osborn is allowing to impact him.

In speaking to The Star, Osborn reiterated his desire to stay at the Yorkshire club beyond the end of the season, but accepts that performances will dictate that outcome: “So it’s really clear for me; have a good end to the season and hopefully, something’s there at the end. If not, it is what it is.

“I love it here. I’ve had an unbelievable time. I love the city. The club, too. When I first came, it was unbelievable. The club was on a massive high and beating some top teams in the Premier League and to have a big season now would mean a lot.”

Osborn joined United in the summer of 2019, and after threatening to qualify for Europe and eventually finishing ninth in their first season, their form dropped off before being relegated from the Premier League.

Osborn has been a key member of the squad since the relegation, being deputised in several different positions on the pitch, something that could continue to be useful beyond the end of this season.

So far this season, the former Nottingham Forest midfielder has played 14 games, including nine stats, something that will have to drastically improve if he is to play his way into Paul Heckingbottom’s long-term plans.

The Verdict

Osborn is the definition of a utility player.

He’s played at wing-back on both flanks, as well as in midfield and his tenacity will impress Heckingbottom.

However, at 28, his next career move will be a major one as he hits his peak years, and having played just 78 league games in his four years with the Blades, a move elsewhere for regular football could kickstart his career as he looks to rediscover the form he showed in the East Midlands.
