Ben Chilwell could make a return to the Chelsea first-team squad after failing to secure a move to a new club in the summer transfer window.

The full-back was left in limbo at the start of the campaign as the club tried to offload him in order to trim down their bloated squad.

The 27-year-old had been offered to Manchester United, but the Blues could not find a club that would buy him or take him on loan for the rest of the season.

Chilwell trained away from the main squad along with the rest of the so-called Bomb Squad who Enzo Maresca deemed surplus to requirements. The Italian says the England international may return to the fold now that there is no prospect of him leaving STamford Bridge until January at least.

Ben Chilwell set for Chelsea return

“We will sit with him and find solutions,” he said of Chilwell. “He is probably going to be back with us [training]. We will see.

At the moment, he is not training with us. The reason why he [was] training apart, is because the idea was for him to leave.”

Another player whom Maresca will need to find a place for is recent arrival Jadon Sancho. The winger joined Chelsea on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United, which includes an obligation to buy next summer.

The west London outfit now possess eight attackers who can play out wide, meaning gametime could be hard to come by for the 24-year-old.

“I said many times I decide the first XI depending on training. Jadon is one of our wingers. I see him how I expect him. Very good player, good quality in one-versus-one. He is exactly the player we knew.

“It is finding the right opportunities for him.”
