Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has admitted that the Blues are in a ‘deep hole’ following their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Chelsea’s poor form broke new grounds at the Emirates Stadium as they suffered the mother of all capitulations after falling three goals down within 34 minutes.

The Blues have now lost six consecutive games since club legend Frank Lampard returned as caretaker manager, but they have failed to taste success since early March.

Chelsea’s next fixture sees them travel to Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth, who have won four of their last five games, leaving them level on points with the Blues, although having played one more game.

Confidence is at an all-time low in the Chelsea locker room, and Chilwell admitted as much, but the English defender insists the side must stick together and finish the horror campaign strongly.

“We’re in a deep hole at the moment,” said Chilwell (via the Evening Standard).

“To get ourselves out of it, we need to stick together. There will be a lot of outside noise, but we need to stick together, train hard, and, coming into games, show the effort the fans want to see.

“It’s pretty big going into next season. If we can get some results, show we’re a team, and give the fans something to smile about – hopefully, we can take that into pre-season.”

Despite the awful run of form, Chelsea have no plans to sack Lampard, with the former Everton manager set to see out the rest of the campaign.

However, the 44-year-old has failed to improve the performances or results of the team, and if their recent form is anything to go by, it is hard to envisage where their next victory will come from.

Chelsea are in advanced talks with Mauricio Pochettino, who is poised to take over from Lampard as the club’s new permanent manager next season.

Lampard has five games left to try and ensure the Blues finish the campaign strongly, as they currently languish in mid-table and are only a stone’s throw away from the relegation zone.
