It doesn’t seem too long ago that people were questioning Blackburn Rovers’ decision to buy Ben Brereton for £7 million.

Fast forward to today, add in a South American surname, and the 23-year-old is one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe.

Brereton-Diaz’s exploits with Chile have been a real-life ‘Roy of the Rovers’ story, sparking talk of a big-money move this summer.

Leeds United and Sevilla are amongst the clubs credited with an interest in Brereton-Diaz, but he would be well advised to resist their advances.

While it may be tempting to think that he would better himself by leaving Rovers, the grass is not always greener elsewhere.

That point is highlighted perfectly by Adam Armstrong, who jumped ship from Rovers last summer to sign for Southampton.

He netted just two goals in 23 appearances for the Premier League club and is now being linked with a move back to the Championship.

Heading further back in time highlights several other players who failed to live up to expectations after exiting Ewood Park.

Roque Santa-Cruz, Grant Hanley, Shane Duffy, Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede are amongst a long list of players who failed to shine after leaving Rovers.

A case can also be made for mentioning Alan Shearer, who failed to win any silverware after leaving Rovers for Newcastle United.

Brereton-Diaz may well be tempted by the riches on offer elsewhere, but sticking around with Rovers for another year could be his most sensible move.

Rovers narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs last season and could mount a serious challenge with Brereton-Diaz in their line-up next term.

The forward has the chance to become a Rovers legend by firing the club back into the Premier League – isn’t that worth more than being a bit-part player elsewhere?
