The last two placement matches of the tournament in Spain were both goalless draws and it needed sudden-death penalties before Belgium and Russia could be separated, the Red Flames eventually winning 7-6.

Scotland’s shoot-out was faster in finding a winner, as Hungary only netted one of their spot-kicks as Pedro Martinez Losa’s side won 3-1.

Jane Ross had been denied an early goal by an offside decision and then brought a save from Barbara Biro

Jen Beattie stopped Henrietta Csiszar scoring, while after a Caroline Weir shot was blocked, Abi Harrison’s follow-up was flagged offside.

Lana Clelland saw her shot saved and later set up Lucy Graham, whose effort was cleared off the line.

Claire Emslie, Sam Kerr and Clelland converted penalties for Scotland, while debutant Eartha Cumings made a decisive save from Csilla Savanya’s spot-kick.
