Finish Position: 11th

Overview:

Standard Liège came into the the Conference League play-offs winless in 20 play-off matches, going all the way back to 2022. Quite simply, they did not stop that embarrassing record. Les Rouches drew seven and lost three of their 10 play-off games, meaning yet another season has petered away at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne. Manager Ivan Leko did have to contend with many injuries in the squad, leading to youthful lineups being fielded. Despite the run, Leko did an alright job, finishing 7th in the regular season despite having little financial backing. However, this dismal continues to go on, and will linger over the club until next March. Since the conclusion of the season, Leko has agreed a deal to become the head coach at Gent, leaving Liège in need of a head coach for the upcoming season.

In the Belgian Cup, Liège were knocked out in the round of 16 by Genk in a 2-1 defeat.

Player of the Season: Matthieu Epolo

The academy goalkeeper has shone during his first full season playing consistently in the first team. According to FotMob, Epolo has been named player of the match seven times in his 27 appearances this campaign. He kept 11 clean sheets and prevented 7.42 goals.

Young Player of the Season: Ilay Camara

The midfielder on loan from RWD Molenbeek has been consistent throughout this season. Not only has he registered two assists, but he has also won four penalties for his side this season. His impressive club performances have also earned him his first cap for Senegal, coming in a 1-1 draw against Ireland on Friday 6th June.

Summer needs:

Despite Epolo’s performances, Les Rouches have been linked with Luton Town goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski. Due to the club suffering back-to-back relegations, Kaminski would be an affordable prospect for Liège. They are also chasing Patro Eisden star Adnane Abid in an attempt to boost their frontline. This is am issue that must be addressed due to Liège’s lack of goals and entertainment this season. Finally, Axel Witsel is set to return to his boyhood club as he departs Atlético Madrid on a free transfer.
